Ruta Malik is a Lithuanian artist based in London. Trained in hand embroidery at the Royal School of Needlework, she explores this ancient craft in a contemporary way, incorporating mixed media into her work.
Ruta believes that blending luxury with incongruous objects elevates the ordinary. With her innovative approach to materials, she places an emphasis on details and textures. Dried fruit skin, moss or rock are positioned together with metallic elements, such as gold threads, foil plates and beads. Ruta combines these with an assemblage of traditional embroidery techniques, with Goldwork being her favourite.
Ruta’s graduate collection, I See You: Noticing the Unnoticeable, received an award from the Worshipful Company of Gold and Silver Wyre Drawers for Exellence in Metal Threadwork. During her studies at the Royal School of Needlework, she was honoured with multiple bursaries from the Franklin Trust Award. Ruta has taken part in various projects and competitions, including the Bradford Textile Society, where she was awarded The Lapa Charitable Trust Award for her textile artwork. In wanting to gain experience in different fields, Ruta has worked with textile artist Ekta Kaul and fashion designer Tamara Ralph.
