Sculptural Textile Art

2025

I See You: Noticing the Unnoticeable is Ruta Malik’s latest hand-embroidered collection, encouraging a deeper appreciation of the details in everyday life. Through two mixed-media artworks, The Stone Cut in Half and Fragmented, she transforms overlooked natural objects into richly textured art, expressing awe for the ordinary.

Central to the collection is Ruta’s non-hierarchical approach to materials — she focuses on their intrinsic physical qualities rather than on perceived beauty or value. A juxtaposition of the ordinary and the luxurious can be seen in her blending of unexpected elements: gold-sprayed lychee skin and non-precious stones sit alongside traditional Goldwork embroidery techniques and semi-precious gemstones such as amber and pyrite.

Ruta sees these pieces as sculptural collages, where embroidery, painting, fabric printing, and material manipulation come together in layered, tactile compositions.
